Hardware Implementation of Decoder for Polar Codes

Assignment:

During this work a decoding algorithm for polar codes shall be implemented. First, various algorithm parameters will be evaluated in a C/C++ simulation environment. Then, the goal is the development of an efficient hardware architecture that shall be implemented with VHDL and verified against the C/C++ reference model.

Background:

The high demands of modern communications standards on throughput and latency performance together with low implementation complexity mandate the use of efficient decoding algorithms for channel coding. One candidate for the use in next generation mobile communications standads like 5G are polar codes. They promise low implementation complexity and reach asymptotically the channel capacity.
